Safety Before Insight
The most common mistake in trauma work is arriving at the truth too early.
There is a temptation, when someone finally speaks of what happened, to move towards it quickly. The material is there; the door is open. It seems wasteful not to enter.
But insight delivered to an unprepared nervous system does not liberate. It floods. People leave such sessions articulate and undone, and often do not return.
Everything in trauma work depends on sequence. First the ground: predictability, pacing, the felt sense that this room will not ask more than can be borne today. Only then the material.
Slowness here is not caution. It is the difference between a memory being revisited and a memory being resolved.
