The nervous system

The Body Keeps Its Own Record

Understanding arrives in an instant. The nervous system moves at another pace entirely.

People often arrive with impressive insight into their own history. They can narrate the difficult years with composure and name precisely what went wrong. And still their shoulders will not drop, still sleep will not come.

This is not failure. It is a reminder that comprehension and safety live in different parts of us. The mind can be persuaded by evidence; the nervous system is persuaded only by experience, repeated gently over time.

So the work slows. We attend to breath, to the pace of a conversation, to the moment when a body braces and the moment when it does not. These are not preliminaries to the real work. They are the real work.

What the mind cannot always explain, the body has been recording faithfully all along. Given safety and time, it begins, quietly, to revise the record.
