Why Relationships Repeat

Patterns are not bad luck. They are old solutions still being applied to new people.

People rarely describe their relationship history as a pattern. They describe a series of unfortunate individuals. Only later does the shape become visible, and with it a familiar sensation from much earlier.

We are drawn, with uncanny precision, towards the emotional climate we learned first. Not because we enjoy it, but because we know its language and believe, somewhere, that this time we might finally win the argument.

Recognising this is uncomfortable and enormously freeing. The pattern is not a flaw of character; it is an old solution applied to new people.

When the original situation is met and understood, the compulsion loses its charge. Choice becomes possible — often for the first time.
